Cost optimization across the global automotive supply chain
With a rapidly expanding product portfolio and growing order volume from top OEMs, Nexteer Automotive sought to further optimize the cost structure of its steering systems. The goal was to implement durable improvements across the full component lifecycle – from design through production. To achieve this without overloading internal engineering teams, Nexteer chose Sii as a partner with proven experience in value engineering and design within a PLM environment.
MCIP team — design analysis, optimization, and change implementation
Sii formed a dedicated MCIP team that combined mechanical, electronic, and manufacturing-process expertise, working closely with Nexteer’s R&D and Procurement functions.
Sii experts conducted a comprehensive review of the design of critical components, pinpointing items with the highest cost-reduction potential. Based on these findings, they prepared end-to-end design recommendations and supported implementation within the client’s environment.
Scope of work included:
- Structural analysis of components and products – design review and identification of high-impact cost drivers
- Design-change recommendations – structural modifications, alternative parts, and assembly optimizations
- Supplier collaboration – participation in technical negotiations and deployment of lower-cost alternatives while maintaining quality compliance
- Validation and documentation – testing and technical documentation updates in the PLM environment (CATIA V5, Mentor Xpedition)
The outcome was a complete cost map and a set of recommendations that could be implemented in both current and future Nexteer programs.
Durable savings and assured production continuity
Thanks to Sii’s interdisciplinary approach, Nexteer achieved measurable savings in component production and extended product lifecycles. The design changes also shortened development cycles for new programs. The MCIP initiative confirmed that Sii’s blend of engineering and business expertise helps global automotive leaders build lasting efficiency and competitiveness.
